Live from the 8th International Wheat Conference (St. Petersburg, Russia) – day 1

About 600 wheat scientists from 77 countries (covering 95% of the wheat production) gathered in the beautiful city of St. Petersburg (Russia) for the 8th International Wheat Conference (IWC). The IWC is held every five years (the last conference was held in 2005 in La Plata, Argentina). Opening sessions of the day 1 (01 June 2010) included presentations by:

  • Hans-Joachim Braun (director of CIMMYT’s Global Wheat Program, Mexico)
  • Nikolay Dzyubenko (N.I.Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Industry, Russia) who delivered the presentation ‘The legacy of Nikolay Vavilov’
  • Olga Mitrofanova (N.I.Vavilov All-Russian Institute of Plant Industry, Russia) who presented on wheat genetic resources research in Russia
  • Ambassador Kenneth M. Quinn (World Food Prize, USA) who presented ‘Dr. Norman Borlaug Memorial Lecture’

The first day continued with 3 plenary sessions:

  1. Current status and perspectives of global wheat research and production (Presenters: P. Pardey, S. Kiselev, J. Dvorak, K. Sayre)
  2. Utilization of wheat genetic resources in breeding (Presenters: A. Boerner, I. Belan, N. Kumarse, I. Leonova, C. Fowler, P. Chen, N. Saulesku, Z. Stehno)

Climate change panel discussion –  Impact on farmers today and implications for strategic wheat research for the future (included speakers from Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Iran, and Morocco)

Lucky participants had the opportunity to visit the museum, seed bank, and herbarium of the N.I.Vavilov Institute in St. Petersburg.
